Howard’s Store

Eden Magnet 28 October 1939
Death. — Mr Matthew Howard
The death occurred at his home, Dulwich Hill, Sydney, last Saturday of Mr. Matthew Howard, a former Eden resident at the age of 71 years, following an illness during the last ten weeks of which he had been confined to his bed. A daughter, Madie, and a son, Jack, survive him. His wife predeceased him nine years ago, and his eldest daughter, Kathleen, also predeceased him, passing away at the early age of 29 years.

Leaving his home Ballyhaughan, County Clare, Ireland, as a young man of 24 years of age, he came out to Australia and eventually arrived at Eden where he took up work as an assistant to Mr A.N. Small, who was engaged in surveying work in this district. For some years after he was engaged in casual work around Eden, including a term with Mr C Downton, I.S.N. Co’s Agent.

He then started a small store keeping business which later reached a stage where he had to move into the premises now (1939) occupied by Mr J.P. Drayson. Here he built up a thriving business and before leaving Eden for Sydney some years ago was trading in a big way. Although he had not the advantage of a good education, he was nevertheless a man of very forceful personality and where business matters were concerned was never at fault.

After leaving Eden for the city he built up several large store businesses, acquired a fine residential property and was doing extremely well. He was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs Michael Howard of whose family of 13 children only 3 survive, Mr James Howard, who has the fine old family property at home in Ireland is the only son surviving and is 75 years of age. Mrs Ike Warren of Eden, and Mrs W. London, Brighton -le -Sands, Sydney, are the surviving daughters being sisters of the late Mr. Matthew Howard whose parting will be regretted by all who knew him.
